NSERC Industrial Research Chair (Associate) in Northern Oil Spill Research (Assistant or Associate Professor) - Position #20872
The University of Manitoba invites applications for an NSERC Industrial Research Chair (IRC, Associate Level) in Northern oil spill research - a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Early- to mid-career researchers demonstrating exceptional promise in the broad fields of detection, fate, effects, or mitigation of oil or other transportation-related contaminant spills in the Northern environment are invited to apply. Expertise in the Arctic marine environment including sea ice will be considered an asset.
The selected candidate will be expected to work with the industrial partner, Stantec Consulting Inc., and the University of Manitoba to apply for NSERC’s prestigious IRC (Associate) program (consult the program website http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Professors-Professeurs/CFS-PCP/ for full program information). Appointment with the University of Manitoba is conditional upon the successful award of an IRC (Associate) to the candidate. The successful candidate will have a reduced teaching load and be expected to develop and maintain a vigorous and independently funded research program that will involve the industrial partner and other relevant collaborators. The successful candidate will also be expected to play a major
role in the Churchill Marine Observatory (CMO; http://umanitoba.ca/ceos/research/CMO.html) project, and other collaborative Arctic research programs at the University of Manitoba.
The position will commence October 1, 2017, or as soon thereafter as possible. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

With more than 125 researchers, students and staff, including one Canada Excellence Research Chair and two Canada Research Chairs, CEOS is one of the most influential Arctic research groups in the world. CEOS’ research is supported by a purpose-built Nellie Cournoyea Arctic Research Facility; laboratories for Earth, environmental and material sciences, ecotoxicology, and applied electromagnetics; Sea-ice Environmental Research Facility;
CMO; CCGS Amundsen icebreaker; and numerous field stations across the Arctic. The Arctic Science Partnership (http://asp-net.org) between CEOS, the Arctic Research Centre at Aarhus University (Denmark), and the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources provides added opportunity for networking. The Riddell Faculty (http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/environment) is the institution’s hub for environmental and Earth System Science research and teaching, focusing on identifying and managing Earth resources, understanding Earth processes, and implications for ecosystems and human societies.
