Activités prévues pour 2018 :

Organiser une séance scientifique au Congrès 2018 de la SCMO.
Organiser l’assemblée générale annuelle parallèlement au Congrès 2018 de la SCMO.
La lettre de nouvelles Arctic SIGnal sera publiée au besoin. Elle portera principalement sur les projets de recherche en démarrage, les rapports d’étape et les récits, sans négliger les entrevues.
Maintien de la présence du GIS sur les pages Facebook et LinkedIn de la SCMO, par l’entremise du sous-groupe ArcticSIG.
Recherche continue de nouveaux participants au GIS ainsi que d’articles scientifiques pour le Bulletin de la SCMO et Arctic SIGnal.

Activités principales en 2017

Le groupe d’intérêts spéciaux (GIS) pour l’Arctique a organisé deux séances scientifiques au Congrès de 2017 : l’une intitulée Année de la prévision polaire, présidée par Greg Smith d’ECCC et l’autre, Stratégies pour l’observation de l’Arctique, présidée par Helen Joseph. Les deux séances ont attiré un grand nombre de participants et ont donné lieu à des présentations et à des discussions scientifiques intéressantes.
Organisation d’une conférence plénière sur l’Arctique donnée par Christian Haas (Ph. D.) de l’Université York et de l’Alfred-Wegener-Institut.
L’assemblée générale annuelle a attiré vingt personnes et a eu lieu lors du congrès 2017 de la SCMO.
Huit articles présentant des recherches et des nouvelles concernant l’Arctique, dont au moins un dans chacun des six numéros de 2017, ont paru dans le Bulletin de la SCMO. Le Bulletin de la SCMO de décembre 2017 (vol. 45, n^o6), un numéro spécial sur l’Arctique, traitait des sciences de la mer et de l’atmosphère dans cette région.
Participation à la conférence « Arctic Change » de l’ArcticNet, à Québec en décembre 2017. Le représentant du GIS pour l’Arctique a jugé les affiches d’étudiants dans le domaine des sciences de la mer. L’ArcticNet a financé cette participation.
La présidente du GIS pour l’Arctique a également assisté à la réunion scientifique annuelle du MEOPAR à Montréal en juin.
Le GIS pour l’Arctique est depuis mars membre associé du Réseau canadien d’opérateurs de recherche nordique (RCORN).

Terms of Reference

In accordance with CMOS Bylaw #5 dealing with Special Interest Groups and recognizing that Canada's North is emerging as an important area for applications of meteorological, oceanographically and related knowledge and data, a special interest group on the Arctic (Arctic SIG) will serve as a focus for CMOS interests in the North.
Objectives of the group include:
1. Handling of CMOS interests related to the Arctic in a consistent and transparent manner ii. Acting as an advisory group to the National Executive Council and membership in discussions between CMOS and others on matters related to Canada's Arctic and Northern Regions.
2. Developing awareness of the importance of meteorology, oceanography and related science to Northern development and Arctic environmental changes and issues
3. The engagement and communication with Northern groups and communities about Arctic meteorological, oceanographic and environmental issues, data and scientific studies
4. Create a neutral forum by which parties from public, private, academic and local communities both Canadian and foreign entities can work in support of Arctic meteorological, oceanographic, environmental issues, data and scientific studies
5. Provide a networking environment in order to bring together all interested groups both public and private in order to further the study of Arctic meteorological, oceanographic and environmental issues, data and scientific studies addressing issues such as climate change
6. Facilitate the publishing of specialized material in Atmosphere-Ocean and elsewhere tied to Arctic and Northern focused research and publications
Mode of Operation: The group will normally work and meet by e-mail but will explore the use of technologies to facilitate national scope meetings and discussions. It may appoint ad hoc working and study groups as required. The need for a face-to-face workshop will be assessed.
1. Monthly or quarterly working meetings
2. Potential for specialized sessions at the CMOS Congress Reporting of activities on a quarterly basis to the CMOS National Executive.
3. Sponsoring of a special track at the annual CMOS conference related to Arctic meteorological, oceanographic, environmental issues, data and scientific studies
Core Activities
1. To represent the interests of CMOS, to develop positions related to Arctic issues and present these to other groups or bodies.
2. To act as an advisory group on discussion with the CMOS membership and on matters related to Canadian Arctic meteorology, oceanography and related matters.
3. To engage Northerners in discussion related to meteorology, oceanography and related matters in the Arctic.
4. Reporting, Budget and fees: A business plan outlining a targeted set of activities will be created that includes any potential fees and expenditures. This will be reported to the CMOS executive as per other committee reporting on an annual basis at the annual general meeting.
Arctic SIG Mandate & TOR review

On an annual basis, the SIG Executives will convene a meeting to review and assess the SIG's mandate and terns of reference to ensure that they meet the intent and mandate of the group and CMOS.
