FELLOWS AND HONORARY FELLOWS

The Society's Annual General Meeting in Saskatoon in 1997 approved the establishment of two new categories of membership in CMOS, namely "Fellows" and "Honorary Fellows". The appointment of a member as a "Fellow" offers us the opportunity of recognizing our own members for their contribution to the Society and for their achievements in their own chosen fields of endeavour. The title "Honorary Fellow" is one that the Society may use to recognize an individual outside the Society, who, by virtue of his/her endeavours, is recognized as an outstanding individual and contributor to society as a whole.

Fellow of the Society

The title " Fellow of the Society " may be granted to members of the Society who have provided exceptional long term service and support to the Society, and/or who have made outstanding contributions to the scientific, professional, educational, forecasting or broadcasting fields in atmospheric or ocean sciences in Canada.

Privileges and Duties of Fellows

  • Fellows are entitled to identify themselves as Fellows of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society by the use of the letters FCMOS.
  • Fellows are expected to promote the objectives of the Society and take part in the deliberations of the "Forum of Fellows".
  • Fellows, as Society members in good standing, are entitled to all of the privileges of such membership.
  • Fellows are normally elected for life, but may resign, or be removed for cause by a two-thirds majority of those present and voting at an Annual or Special General Meeting.

Honorary Fellow of the Society

The title " Honorary Fellow " may be granted to persons who are not members of the Society who have made particularly outstanding contributions to the scientific, professional, educational, forecasting or broadcasting fields in atmospheric or ocean sciences in Canada or abroad.

Privileges and Duties of Honorary Fellows

  • Honorary Fellows are entitled to identify themseIves as Honorary Fellows of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society by the use of the letters HFCMOS.
  • Honorary Fellows may attend the Annual or Special General Meetings of the Society.
  • Honorary Fellows are entitled to receive the CMOS Bulletin SCMO.
  • Honorary Fellows are normally elected for life, but may resign, or be removed for cause by a two-thirds majority or those present and voting at an Annual or Special General Meeting.

The Forum of Fellows

When Council deems it appropriate it may create a "Forum of Fellows" (the Forum) which may meet at any regularly constituted Annual or Special General Meeting to consider matters, issues, policies or concerns of relevance to the Society and recommend appropriate actions for consideration by Council or the Society. As needed, the President, Executive or Council may choose to refer matters of concern to the Society to the Forum for study, comment or advice.
