Fully-funded PhD positions available at the University of Waterloo in climate and atmospheric science

The Department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Waterloo, Canada is recruiting fully-funded doctoral research positions in numerical modelling, machine-learning and remote sensing as applied to the climate and cryosphere. The available funding is valued at more than C$100,000 over four years, beginning in September 2021. Students with grade averages of 85% or higher in their previous two years of study are eligible for an additional $10,000 entrance award.
 
Applicants should have, or expect to receive shortly, a Master’s degree in Earth system science, physical geography, applied mathematics, physics, or a closely related field. A record of previous research using output from Earth system models, or observation-based climate datasets like global or regional reanalyses, would be a major asset. Previous experience with a scientific programming language like Python, Matlab or R for data analysis and visualisation would be an advantage.
 
The positions will be supervised by Dr Chris Fletcher, climate scientist and head of the Climate Modelling and Analysis group at University of Waterloo. The Fletcher research team investigates the processes controlling high-latitude climate variability and change---and interactions between snow, ice, climate and hydrosphere---through a combination of state-of-the art Earth system modelling, satellite data and observation-based data. Interested applicants should contact Dr Chris Fletcher chris.fletcher@uwaterloo.ca. Applications are most welcome from individuals in groups that are traditionally underrepresented in natural sciences and engineering. The doctoral candidates will study within the Joint Program in Geography at Waterloo, which is a vibrant and highly interdisciplinary graduate program focused on finding innovative and transformative solutions to local and global environmental challenges. The Faculty of Environment is Canada’s largest, housing internationally recognised experts in climate and cryospheric science. Highly interdisciplinary research focus on some of the biggest problems facing global society, with close connections to the University of Waterloo’s Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change (IC3).
