Aldona Wiacek

Dr. Wiacek is cross-appointed in the Departments of Environmental Science as well as Astronomy & Physics at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. She is interested in remote sensing of atmospheric trace gases involved in air pollution and climate and also in the climate effects of aerosol (suspended particles) through cloud interactions. Her research includes the development of ground- and satellite-based remote sensing instrumentation and data analysis techniques (retrieval algorithms and inverse theory).
She is currently establishing the Tropospheric Remote Sensing Laboratory (TRSL) to characterize atmospheric composition in the planetary boundary layer at SMU and in the field, with the end goal of improving the understanding and prediction of atmospheric processes. Dr. Wiacek helped establish the Toronto Atmospheric Observatory as part of her Ph.D. studies at the University of Toronto. She then researched aerosol-cloud interactions as a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the Swiss Federal Institute (ETH) in Zürich. Finally, she held the position of Research Associate (remote sensing of aerosols) at Dalhousie University in Halifax before joining SMU in 2013.

La Dre Wiacek est nommée à la fois aux Départements de science environnementale ainsi que d’astronomie et de physique de l’Université Saint Mary’s de Halifax. Elle s’intéresse à la télédétection des gaz atmosphériques à l’état de traces, qui jouent dans la pollution de l’air et le climat, ainsi qu’aux effets des aérosols sur le climat (particules en suspension) par l’interaction des nuages. Ses recherches englobent la conception d’instruments terrestres et satellitaires de télédétection ainsi que de méthodes d’analyse de données (algorithmes d’extraction et théorie des problèmes inverses).
La Dre Wiacek s’emploie à établir, à l’Université Saint Mary’s et sur le terrain, le Laboratoire de télédétection troposphérique (TRSL) qui vise à définir la composition de l’atmosphère de la couche limite planétaire afin d’améliorer la compréhension et la prédiction des processus atmosphériques. Elle aidera à mettre sur pied l’Observatoire atmosphérique de Toronto dans le cadre de ses études de doctorat à l’Université de Toronto. La Dre Wiacek mènera ensuite des recherches sur les interactions aérosols-nuages à titre de boursière de recherches postdoctorales Marie-Curie à l’École polytechnique fédérale (ETH) de Zurich. Enfin, elle occupe le poste d’associée de recherche (télédétection des aérosols).

Bruce Sutherland

Bruce Sutherland received his PhD in atmospheric science in the Department of Physics at the University of Toronto in 1994 then pursued postdoctoral training in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge before taking up a position in 1997 as Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Alberta.
He is now a Professor jointly appointed in the Departments of Physics and of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta. His research combines theory, numerical simulations and laboratory experiments to examine phenomena occurring in stratified fluid. Main topics include interfacial and vertically propagating internal waves, the evolution of gravity currents and plumes in stratified fluids, and the transport and deposition of sediments in geophysical flows.

Dominique Paquin

Dominique Paquin has been a specialist in the Climate Simulations and Analysis group at Ouranos, a consortium on regional climatology and adaptation to climate change since 2002, when the consortium was created. She holds a master's degree in atmospheric science from UQAM (1997) and specializes in climate change and regional modeling, particularly in relation to precipitation with high environmental impact. She is responsible for training related to climate sciences for Ouranos.

 Christopher Poitras

I was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and since I can remember I have had a strong interest in Meteorology, Climatology, Oceanography and Geosciences.

I received my Weather Forecasting certificate from Penn State University in December of 2019. I am currently in my third year online at Marshal completing a Bachelor of Science, major in Geography, emphasis in Weather Broadcasting, and minor in Meteorology.

A career meteorologist since 1987, having graduated from Plymouth University in the UK, and currently serving as the Director of Meteorological Research and Development for Pelmorex Weather Networks.
After graduating from Plymouth, I began my weather forecasting career in the offshore oil industry in the UK and several years later transitioned to the provision of weather services for a broad range of media outlets and industrial clients. By the end of the 1990’s I had become increasingly immersed in the design of technological solutions for the improvement of meteorological services.
Moving to Canada with my family in 2000 to work for Pelmorex, I continued to develop my career at the interface of atmospheric and computer sciences, based on a lifelong learning attitude and the completion of numerous academic studies. My current focus is to lead the research and design of innovative technologies for next generation weather forecasting improvements for Pelmorex Weather Networks. Accomplishing this goal requires a strong focus on weather observations datasets in order to ensure a strong foundation of weather data ground truth, for example in the application of machine learning techniques.
